Pembrokeshire tree surgery, dismantling, felling & removal
TREE MANAGEMENT
Although the felling and removal of trees is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. Mow Wales can help you decide whether a tree should be felled, or if surgical intervention would be a more cost effective and ecologically sound solution to the problem. Just ask Mow!
FELLING

Complete removal of a mature tree is justified if; the tree is dead or dying and needs to be removed for safety, or if it is causing an obstruction that is impossible to correct through pruning, or is to be replaced with a more vigorous, healthy, specimen.
[ BONUS: To straight fell, or dismantle? ]Straight felling (or 'directional felling' ) is the removal of the tree as a single unit.
This felling method is limited to situations where there is no risk of damage to property, or danger to persons. Trees to be straight felled will be guided by the use of ropes and wedges to ensure a controlled directional fall.
Dismantling (sometimes referred to as a 'controlled drop' or 'sectional felling' ) describes the process of removing a tree in sections, from the top down, when space is too limited for a straight fell.

Whilst a slightly more time consuming process, dismantling is the only option where limited space (or local by-laws ) does not permit directional felling.

TREE SURGERY

Where power, telephone or internet cables cross onto private property, the responsibility for their protection passes to you, the landowner.
mow.wales' arborists will ensure that a minimum clearance distance is kept from overhead power lines. In urban settings across Pembrokeshire, this is approximately 10 feet or 3 metres.
[ BONUS: Remedial crown works explained. . . ]Tree crown thinning: 'Thinning' opens the canopy of a tree to allow better light penetration, and help restore the tree's natural shape.
The work of thinning involves removing secondary branches throughout the crown, up to a maximum of 25% of the total volume. This increases light and reduces wind resistance, leaving the tree with a balanced structure, whilst retaining its overall size and shape.
Crown reduction: describes downsizing the spread & height of a tree by removing carefully selected branches, reducing the overall canopy size. . . the extent of which will be determined by the species, location and overall structural integrity of the tree.
Crown lifting: A process of removing lower lateral branches in order to increase ground clearance below the canopy, allowing better light and wind penetration to help dry out waterlogged, shaded, ground below. 'Lifting' is the preferred approach to this problem because it does less damage to a tree than reducing its overall canopy size.
Crown lifting is best carried out gradually over a period of two or three growing seasons.

STUMP GRINDING

Stump removal involves the complete eradication of the stump and any lateral roots of the tree, using a high powered stump grinder, to a depth below ground level of between 150mm and 300mm.
After stump removal, the remaining hole will be back-filled with soil or grinding waste to leave a completely level surface, ready for lawn or planting.
