[ BONUS: When to cut and mow ]Spring growth here starts in April, so an initial high cut is recommended, certainly by the middle of the month. As the temperature and day length increases, plan a mowing frequency of every 2 weeks until June.
June, July & August: Mow frequently throughout the summer months; weekly if possible and budget allows. Mow Wales can lower the cutting height to accommodate fortnightly mowing, but remember that a tighter cut will encourage moss, especially during extended wet periods.
If the weather is dry and hot, growth will slow markedly, but the grass should still be cut at least every two weeks, with a raised mowing height if necessary, to maintain your lawn's root health.
September: The regular autumn rains make this a surprisingly good growing month, so a minimum fortnightly mowing frequency is highly recommended.
October & November: During these last two months of the season the cut height should be increased to match slower growth and to keep moss under control. The last regular cut of the year will probably occur in November.
Winter mowing. There is no reason to have an unkempt lawn for one third of the year!
Because of the gentle Pembrokeshire climate, a light 'topping' cut is perfectly safe during the winter months so long as the soil is not waterlogged and no ground frost is expected within 24 hours.

SPORTS GROUNDS
Proper sports field grass cutting requires maintaining a height of 25 to 35mm, ideally with a minumum weekly cut during peak growth season (April - September ).
The 'one-third rule' means never cutting more than one-third of the blade length. This encourages healthy growth, while frequent, sharp cutting with proper collection ensures a flat, disease-resistant, playing surface.
Higher mowing heights encourage deeper roots and an overall healthier turf, with an increased ability to acquire water and nutrients. This, in turn, allows the grass to recover faster and makes overall turf maintenance easier.
