Do I need to be at home during a mowing?  Not at all, the majority of our customers are not at home when we call, but we are self-sufficient and all we need is access to the lawns.   If you would prefer to be in when we are working, we will do our best to accommodate you.

Why does Mow use walk-behind mowers?   Although more physically demanding, a walk-behind mower is easier to navigate into and around most residential gardens, avoiding damage to trees, flowerbeds and footpaths. . .  they are also much quieter and use less fuel!

Ride-on mowers are only suited to large, flat, grassed areas with minimal obstacles, such as you'd find in a caravan park, camping site or sports fields.

I have trees growing in my lawn, can you mow around them without damage?   Yes of course!   A strimmer is used to cut the grass safely around obstacles, including trees, and to tidy the edges of the lawned area.

How often should my grass be cut?   As a rule-of-thumb, a lawn should always be mown when it is actively growing, and often enough so that only a third of the length is cut each time.   In our Welsh climate, we recommend at least a fortnightly cut during the growing season (see the BONUS content below ).

Should my lawn be cut during a heat wave?   Ironically, grass can become dormant in the heat of summer, significantly slowing growth. . .  especially during an extended dry spell.

When should I water the lawn?   Always assuming that there are no hosepipe restrictions, the best time to water grass is early morning, when there is less wind, lower temperatures and, therefore, minimal evaporation.   Plus;  this gives the grass time to dry during the day, which helps prevent fungal diseases.

Should I water every day?   No, daily shallow watering forces grass to develop short, weak roots that dry out easily in the summer heat.   You should practice 'deep but infrequent' watering. . .  ask Mow!

Should I fertilise my lawn before or after mowing?   It is recommended to mow grass before applying fertiliser or other lawn treatments.

Is it illegal to dump grass cuttings?   Yes, dumping grass cuttings in woods, hedgerows, or on any land that isn't your own is classified as fly-tipping, which is a criminal offense.   With a Waste Carriers Certificate, Mow is able to dispose of green waste at council operated tips.

Can grass cuttings be used as mulch?   Fresh grass clippings can be applied as a 2" thick layer of garden mulch around established shrubs and plants.   It supresses weeds, locks in moisture, and breaks down over time to feed the soil.

Can cuttings be composted?   Yes, but newly cut grass should be mixed at least 50 / 50 with 'brown' waste such as leaves, hedge clippings, plant-based kitchen waste, even paper or cardboard. . .  then turned over occasionally to aerate it.

Are you able to turn my compost for me?   Yes. . .  just ask Mow!

Will Mow Wales take away my grass cuttings?   If you are not composting or using them as a mulch, then Mow will remove the cuttings for safe disposal.

Is there a cheaper alternative to buying moss killer?   A money saving tip:  100ml of washing up liquid added to 5 litres of water and applied to patches of moss using a spray bottle is a really effective treatment, and only costs pennies!

How will I know that it's worked?   A day or so after application you’ll see the treated areas of moss turn from green, to a rusty brown colour. . .  eventually drying-up completely, and is able to be raked away.   Any bare patches left can then be brushed, and spread with a mixture of grass seed and lawn feed to repair the damage.

How do I prevent moss returning?   Moss doesn't like bright sun light, so the first step is to reduce shading by having low, overhanging, tree branches or hedges cut back.   Healthy grass will naturally outcompete moss, so the lawn should be aerated to improve local drainage and the mowing height increased slightly.
